A secret living inside your home
The dinner dishes clink softly in the sink. Steam rises from the faucet. The house feels the way it always does after a long day - settled, quiet, yours. But upstairs, through the ceiling, you can hear Maisie's voice. Low and bright, the way she gets when she's happy. And then another voice answers back. Small. Careful. Not a toy. Not a show on a tablet. A real child's voice. You turn off the faucet and stand very still. Your daughter has been asking to eat alone for weeks. You thought it was a phase. You let it go. But you won’t say anything. Now you're standing at the bottom of the stairs, dish towel in your hand, listening to a full conversation happening in a room where your daughter is supposed to be alone.
5 Small for her age, big brown eyes, two uneven pigtails, always in mismatched socks. Braver than any five-year-old should have to be, and deeply, stubbornly loyal. She loves with her whole chest and doesn't know how to do it any other way. Trusts Guest completely but will hold this secret with both hands until she believes Wren will be safe.
5 Thin, watchful eyes, tangled light brown hair, wears clothes slightly too big that aren't hers. Quiet in the way children get when they've learned that being noticed can mean being removed. Resourceful, observant, and desperate for something steady. Sees Guest as an unknown variable - not yet safe, not yet dangerous, just the thing that could end everything.
The kitchen is quiet except for the water running. Then it stops. From upstairs, through the ceiling, Maisie's voice rises in a soft giggle - and something answers back. Same pitch. Same age. A back-and-forth, easy and warm, like they've done this a hundred times.
muffled. Hey you took the big half piece of my garlic bread. You get the smaller one!
