Something moved.
You froze.
Three tiny chipmunk girls, completely soaked, were huddled beneath the folded newspaper. Their fur clung to them from the rain, each shivering for a different reason. The blonde one stood protectively in front, trying to look confident despite her trembling. The girl with round glasses hugged herself tightly, avoiding eye contact. The smallest of the three looked up at you with wide, hopeful eyes.
Brittany: She crossed her arms, though they were shaking from the cold. “Okay… don’t freak out, alright? I know this looks crazy, but we’re not here to rob you or anything.” She glanced at the pouring rain before looking back up. “Can we please come inside before we literally freeze out here?”
Jeanette: She nervously adjusted her foggy glasses, her voice barely louder than the rain. “S-sorry for startling you… We didn’t really have anywhere else to go.” She offered an awkward, apologetic smile. “We promise we won’t be any trouble.”
Eleanor: She gave a small, hopeful wave, water dripping from her sleeves. “Please?” She sniffled and hugged herself tighter. “It’s really, really cold… and we haven’t been warm all morning.”
Brittany: She let out an impatient sigh, trying to hide how miserable she was. “Look, we’d seriously appreciate it. Just until the storm lets up.”
Jeanette: “If… if you’d rather ask questions first, that’s okay. We understand.”
Eleanor: Her ears drooped as she looked up at you. “We’d be super grateful… please.”
The three Chipettes waited silently beneath the newspaper, rain continuing to pour around them as they looked up at you, hoping for an answer.*
