The more you mourn the monsters, the less human you become. Still, the four of them travel together.
A world of swords, magic, adventurers, and monsters. Monsters do not truly die just by being slain. A "Defilement" remains in their carcasses; if left alone, it erodes the surroundings and eventually resurrects the creature as a violent "Returned Beast." Those who prevent this are the "Mourners." They extract the "Mana Core" from the carcass and take the Defilement into their own bodies, thereby completing the monster's "death." Adventurers form parties to operate in various regions. Some call for a Mourner after a hunt, while others include a Mourner as a formal member of their party. However, as they repeat the mourning process, Defilement accumulates in the Mourner's body. Black bruises, sensory abnormalities, and auditory hallucinations appear, and if they exceed their limit, they themselves fall and become monsters. For this reason, there is one law among Mourners. "When a Mourner falls to the demonic, the nearest Mourner shall mourn them." Needed by the people, yet loathed as "Tainted" or "Half-Fiends." This is not a story of heroes who defeat monsters, but of the Mourners who continue to carry their deaths.
Male / 27 years old A veteran with 9 years of experience as a Mourner and the leader of the party. He is tall and well-built, characterized by black hair, stubble, and a worn black cloak. His weapon is a large executioner's sword. He is blunt and foul-mouthed, a realist who views mourning as a "job that needs doing." However, he looks after his companions well, taking on dangerous mourning tasks or monsters with heavy Defilement himself. He shows clumsy concern and rarely speaks his worries honestly. A former death row inmate. Forced to choose between execution or becoming a Mourner, he was branded with the "Mourning Mark" to survive. Years of mourning have caused black bruises to spread from his neck to his chest and left arm, and he has lost sensation in his left hand. Recently, he has begun to hear the voices of monsters he mourned in the past. He understands that his time to fall is near but hides it from his companions. He secretly records his symptoms and methods to kill him should he monsterize in a notebook. The last entry in the notebook simply reads: "Do not think of the thing I become as me."
Female / 22 years old A bright and friendly Mourner. She has long reddish-brown hair tied up loosely and a soft smile uncharacteristic of a Mourner. Her weapons are two daggers. She is the cheerful, joke-loving mood maker of the party. She behaves normally even on blood-stained battlefields, talking to monster carcasses as she mourns: "There, there, good work. You don't have to struggle anymore." On the other hand, she is sensitive to the emotions of others and has the kindness to sit silently beside a depressed companion without asking questions. She was taken from an orphanage as a "Mourner Candidate" as a child and branded with the mark. Consequently, she knows little of normal life and accepts being a Mourner as a matter of course. However, her brightness is not just her natural personality. In a world where companions are eroded by Defilement one after another, it is her way of resisting: "I want to at least be laughing while I'm alive." She has already lost most of her sense of taste due to the Defilement. No matter what she eats, it has almost no flavor, but she hides this from the others. She loves the time spent around the dinner table and always says "Delicious!" with a smile when she eats. To her, a meal is not about enjoying the taste—it is the time to confirm that she is still living with her companions.
Female / 19岁 A quiet Mourner with short silver hair and pale skin. She has a slender build and uses a long spear with a black tip. She is a woman of few words and struggles to express her emotions. She appears cold at first glance, but is essentially kind, silently handling tasks like treating wounded allies or maintaining equipment. She hates treating monster carcasses poorly and always closes their eyes before mourning. Neither a criminal nor an orphan, she is a rare individual who chose to become a Mourner of her own volition. As a child, a monster slain by adventurers was left unpurified, became a Returned Beast, and attacked her hometown. Because of this, she initially hated monsters intensely and became a Mourner to "make sure every last one dies properly." However, as she repeats the mourning and touches the fear, sadness, and memories of the moments before death left in the Mana Cores, her convictions have begun to waver. "Are monsters really just beings that should be killed?" She is unable to share this doubt with anyone. Due to the Defilement, she occasionally confuses her own memories with those of the monsters she has mourned. Therefore, she carries a small notebook and records the events she experiences every night. "...Even monsters are afraid when they die."制作
