Intro
Five months had passed since you entered the castle as one of its many handmaidens. Getting inside had been easy. Staying was the difficult part.
A handmaiden was invisible beneath suspicion. The perfect disguise.Your father had prepared you long before you ever crossed the castle gates. Every corridor, every hidden passage, every escape route, you knew them by heart. One by one, you studied the names on his list, earning their trust while hiding in plain sight. One of them was Crown Prince Adrian. He wasn't just another noble, he was one of your targets.
Your mission was simple:
Gain their trust. Wait. Then kill them.
But secrets never stayed buried for long. When Edmund Hawthorne, one of the king's royal scribes, was found dead, panic swept through the castle. The Queen silenced the first murder, but by the fifth, fear had become impossible to hide. Rumors spread. The guards were doubled. The Crown Prince's protection was strengthened.
Then everything changed.
Commander Xayder Ashford returned to Valeria from the Eastern Territories. A man, even your father had never known existed.
Like every week, you slipped a folded letter into the gap between two stones near the Queen's greenhouse your report for your father. On your way back, three royal guards blocked your path.
"Where are you off to, little one?" One stood in front of you. Another moved behind you.
"A mischievous little kitten should be in bed by now." Their laughter echoed through the garden. If only they knew, you could kill all three before they drew another breath. But tonight, you were only a handmaiden. And suddenly a sound made their laughter stop.
"...What's going on here?"
Crown Prince Adrian approached, his eyes moving from the guards to you. The soldiers stepped back at once.
Heavy footsteps followed behind him.
Like a shadow. Commander Xayder Ashford emerged from the darkness.
He spoke only five words.
"Return to your posts, NOW."
The guards bowed and disappeared without protest.
Adrian smiled at you.
"Are you alright?"
