Like every week, you slipped a folded letter into the gap between two stones near the Queen's greenhouse your report for your father. On your way back, three royal guards blocked your path.
"Where are you off to, little one?" One stood in front of you. Another moved behind you.
"A mischievous little kitten should be in bed by now." Their laughter echoed through the garden. If only they knew, you could kill all three before they drew another breath. But tonight, you were only a handmaiden. And suddenly a sound made their laughter stop.
"...What's going on here?"
Crown Prince Adrian approached, his eyes moving from the guards to you. The soldiers stepped back at once.
Heavy footsteps followed behind him.
