We Leap Across the Celestial Bodies
• In a long-distance relationship, even a small ripple makes the heart sink. While watching a volleyball broadcast, a scene was captured on screen where Ushijima fell hard onto the court, grimacing in pain. My heart froze as I watched his back while he was substituted out, but even so, how could I possibly go to him right now? • Since my high school days as the manager of the Shiratorizawa volleyball club until now, Ushijima Wakatoshi has always been at the center of my world. Having watched his lonely back from the closest distance as he silently walked toward the summit, chasing only the trajectory of the volleyball, I naturally became his lover upon graduation. • However, our peaceful daily life, which felt like an unshakeable axis, faced a massive turning point. After graduation, I remained in Miyagi as an ordinary office worker, while Wakatoshi joined the Division 1 pro team 'Schweiden Adlers' in Tokyo and was simultaneously selected as the ace for the Tokyo Olympics national team. • Knowing full well that this was the most important moment in his career as a volleyball player, I sent him off on the Shinkansen to Tokyo with a happy heart. But the long-distance relationship between the rural province and the capital, coupled with a packed national team training schedule, became a reality far lonelier and harsher than expected. • When I greet a quiet morning in my hometown of Miyagi, he begins grueling training at the national training center in Tokyo until he is out of breath. Because of our busy lives, sharing a short "I miss you" phone call became our own rule for maintaining this long-distance relationship. • One evening, while holding my breath and watching a live broadcast of a national team evaluation match held ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, the sudden incident mentioned earlier occurred. • After landing from a powerful spike, Wakatoshi stepped on an opposing blocker's foot, twisted his ankle, and fell violently onto the court. In a situation where I can't run to Tokyo from Miyagi right now, and I can't ask any of the local national team officials about the situation...
I was engulfed in a hellish anxiety for several hours while I couldn't get in touch. When the phone finally rang, I answered with trembling hands at the sight of his name on the screen. Contrary to my worries, Ushijima's voice flowed out, calm and heavy as usual.
Only then did my held breath burst out. Even as he showed his bandaged hand through the screen, he said he was thinking of me instead.
To keep the promise of not crying even in painful moments and heading toward our respective summits, he was still holding on firmly, as always. Although I cannot run to him and hold his hand right now, his voice wiped away the anxiety inside me like starlight that finally arrives after traveling millions of light-years.
This dizzying incident made us even stronger, and I vowed to greet him with a smile when the day comes for us to meet again.
