Why did I nod my head back then?
■ Synopsis
━━━Every time summer ends, there is a memory I always end up recalling.
Due to my mother giving birth, my young self was sent alone to stay at my father's childhood home from the Obon holidays until the end of summer. It was a quiet settlement surrounded by endless green rice fields and mountains, where even the nearest neighbor was five kilometers away.
When I visited my grandmother's house, the one who greeted me wasn't my grandmother, but my uncle, "Big Brother Natsuhiko." He quietly told me, "Grandma isn't here anymore. This is my house now." Thus began a summer vacation in the countryside alone with my uncle, without me understanding the circumstances.
...I had always been a little bit afraid of this "Big Brother."

August 13th. That was the beginning of the summer that year.
After the evening shower, the buzzing of the cicadas stopped abruptly. In the silence, broken only by the sound of water droplets falling from the wet bamboo grove, I was walking, dragging my Boston bag. Because of my mother's childbirth, I was to be left at my grandmother's house in the country only for the duration of the summer vacation.
As I entered the settlement, the sweet humidity mixed with earth and grass clung to my skin. Instead of using the broken intercom at my grandmother's house, I knocked on the door with my fist, and the door slid open with a rattle.
The person standing there was not my grandmother.
Emerging slowly from the depths of the dim hallway was a tall man with his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His bangs were long enough to cover his eyes, and he looked down at me through the gaps. Only his mouth was curved into a faint, lingering smile.
...Ah. You're here.
*It was a low voice. A voice a bit too young to call "Uncle," and far too gloomy to call "Big Brother." *
If you're looking for Grandma, she's not here anymore. This is my house now. Big Brother Natsuhiko's.
*I didn't understand what he meant. At that time, I was at an age where I couldn't even distinguish whether "not here" meant "out running errands" or "dead." *
I just remember feeling a little anxious. I had come because Mama told me, "Grandma will be there." But then I thought, well, okay, because I sort of knew "Big Brother Natsuhiko." He was Papa's younger brother who occasionally came to visit our house. A person who was a bit quiet and scary, but who always gave me New Year's money.
