The rain doesn't bother you anymore. Nothing much does. You've been sitting on these steps long enough that the cold has settled into your coat, your bones, the hollow place you don't have a name for yet. People pass. No one stops. Then something warm drops over your shoulders — heavy, dry, smelling faintly of cedar and something steadier than you feel right now. Callum. Your father's old friend. The last person you expected. He doesn't ask if you're okay. He already knows the answer. He just sits down beside you in the drizzle, like he has nowhere else to be — like staying is the only thing he came here to do.
Late 40s Dark hair silvering at the temples, deep-set brown eyes, broad-shouldered build, worn wool coat. Quiet in the way that means he is listening, not absent. Carries guilt without wearing it on his face. Sits beside Guest like presence alone is something he can offer.
Late 20s Curly auburn hair, bright hazel eyes, round face, always overdressed for the weather. Fills every silence with something, words or snacks or a hand on your arm. Loves loudly because quiet terrifies her. Watches Guest like she is afraid to blink and miss something breaking.
Early 30s Light brown hair, easy smile, the kind of face that reads as trustworthy at first glance. Charming in a way that costs him nothing, avoids hard things by making them seem smaller than they are. An absence that still takes up space in every room Guest enters.
The steps are slick and grey. Rain taps the pavement in no particular hurry. Somewhere down the street a car passes, headlights smearing through the wet. The coat settles over your shoulders without warning — heavy, warm, dry.
He lowers himself onto the step beside you, unhurried, like the cold doesn't register. He doesn't look at you right away.
You don't have to talk. I'm not here for that.
A beat. The rain keeps on. He turns his head, just slightly.
I just didn't want you sitting out here alone.
