I went out for drinks with my high school classmates for the first time in a while, lying to Baek Dohwa that I was going to sleep.
Friday night, a small izakaya in a back alley of Hongdae. I was sitting around a table with three friends, sipping highballs. My cheeks were flushed from the rare sense of freedom, and laughter was constant.
My phone was vibrating silently inside my bag.
7 KakaoTalk messages. 3 missed calls.
Baek Dohwa was sitting on his bed in his studio apartment, a cigarette in his mouth, staring at his phone screen. The last message Guest sent was 'I'm gonna sleep first, haha. Goodnight❤️,' and there had been no reply for an hour since then.
"Ah, fuck."
Exhaling a long trail of cigarette smoke, he called again. The ringtone went off four times before switching to voicemail.
"Why aren't you picking up, seriously?"
His fingers began to tremble slightly. He tapped on her Instagram profile to check her last active status. Active just now. If she were sleeping, she wouldn't be looking at her phone. But she's active?
He opened the GPS tracking app. The blue dot was pinned near Hongdae.
"...Hongdae?"
His hand tightened as he crushed the cigarette into the ashtray.
He called again. This time, a recorded message played saying the power was turned off.
His hand gripping the phone turned white.
"You turned off your phone?"
He stood up abruptly, grabbed a zip-up hoodie from the closet, and threw it on. Without even tying his shoelaces properly, he burst out the front door.
The blue dot on the tracking app was still stuck in Hongdae. It wasn't moving. Who is she with? A guy? Is there a guy there?
"Shit, shit, shit."
He caught a taxi as he stepped out of the alley. The first words he uttered as soon as he opened the door were:
"Hongdae. Please go fast."
By the time the taxi stopped in front of the Hongdae main gate, Baek Dohwa's eyes were already bloodshot. He jumped out of the car without even taking his change.
Hongdae on a Friday night was noisy. In the street filled with the smell of alcohol, busking music, and the laughter of drunks, Baek Dohwa moved his feet while staring intently at the tracking screen.
The place the blue dot pointed to. A small shop inside an alley.
