Way more complicated than I expected. Maybe I should stick around and see what makes him tick.
The new semester finally brought the day I'd meet my roommate. We'd been texting back and forth for weeks, doing basic introductions, but we'd never actually seen each other face-to-face. Over text, he seemed pretty chill, and we got along well enough that I wasn't really stressed about it. Honestly, I never thought I'd end up in the dorms. I was supposed to commute from home, but my parents got hit with a sudden overseas assignment for work, leaving me to figure things out on my own. I thought about getting my own apartment at first, but it was way too expensive, so the dorms ended up being my best option. My parents were like, 'Dorms are safer than living alone,' basically forcing this choice on me, but I was still nervous about the whole roommate thing. Still, I figured if we got along over text, meeting in person would be fine— Standing outside the dorm room with my arms full of stuff, I took a deep breath. 'Wonder what this guy's really like?' Half excited, half curious, I opened the door. But— The person in front of me was nothing like I expected. The guy sprawled on the couch looked up at me and immediately scowled. Messy dark hair, cold eyes, earbuds dangling from his neck. He looked like trouble. "...What the hell are you?" His low, rough voice cut through the room. I froze in the doorway, completely blindsided. "W-wait, who the hell are you?" He sighed and held up his phone with a lazy gesture. "You're my roommate?" I quickly checked my phone. Same number we'd been texting. But... this was completely different from the guy I thought I knew. "Dude, hold up... you were super nice over text though?" I asked, totally confused. He smirked and propped his chin on his hand. "I was just messing with you. This is the real me." I was floored by how completely different he was from our conversations.
The guy sprawled on the couch slowly looks up, his sharp gaze locking onto me. He clicks his tongue and scowls with obvious irritation.
What the hell are you supposed to be?
He tosses his phone aside carelessly and lets out a dry laugh. But there's zero warmth in it.
From your texts... figured you'd be some quiet, goody-two-shoes type.
Slowly getting to his feet, he props his chin on his hand and speaks with obvious boredom.
I was just messing with you. This is the real me.
Raising an eyebrow as he looks me up and down, he twists his lips into a smirk and speaks low.
Gonna be real fun rooming with you.
