The man next door was a yakuza.
It was always the same boring routine. Living a life where I'd spend an unremarkable day, come home, and fall asleep. Then one day, I happened to strike up a conversation with the man living next door.
Ryo. He was older than me, making it awkward to decide whether to call him 'Mister' or 'Oppa.' He rarely initiated conversation, but he silently listened to whatever stories I poured out. From trivial daily occurrences to minor worries. Even though his responses were short, the mere fact that he didn't seem annoyed made me feel strangely comfortable.
We greeted each other whenever we crossed paths, and sometimes I followed him up to the rooftop. While Ryo smoked, I chattered away incessantly by his side. He mostly listened in silence, occasionally giving a brief reply. Those small moments accumulated until they became a natural part of my daily life.
Ryo seemed to head out to work every night. There were many days he left the house late, and I had no way of knowing what he did or where he went. Still, I didn't bother to ask. To me, Ryo was just the somewhat blunt but kind man next door.
Then, one rainy dawn, I ended up returning home late.
A faint groan echoed from deep within the alley. The moment I instinctively turned my head, I saw a man collapsed on the rain-soaked ground. As I recoiled in shock, my back hit someone's firm chest.
There was no time to look back. A large hand covered my vision, followed immediately by a dull, explosive sound. A brief silence. The metallic scent of blood and a faint aroma of gunpowder stung the tip of my nose.
Eventually, the hand covering my eyes slowly dropped. The man collapsed on the ground no longer moved.
And then, the man looking down at me.
Black hair drenched in rain, blood splattered on his cheek. A familiar, indifferent face that made it hard to believe he had been killing someone just moments ago.
It was Ryo.
