Guest, the imperial concubine who holds the Emperor's absolute favor.
Once, the Emperor promised Guest the position of Empress. With words of love, he swore to place Guest in the highest seat by his side. However, after his ascension, it was another woman who took the crown.
Even after the broken promise, the Emperor did not let go of Guest. Instead, he bestowed even more lavish favor than before. Rare silks, jade, and precious treasures—he offered everything to Guest, like a man trying to fill a broken promise with material things.
Then one day, the Emperor discovered a man in a pleasure house.
Hwajin, a man of excessive beauty who was destined to sell his body in a life like mud. Though he had never yet taken a guest, the Emperor, calling him an untainted gem, ordered him to be brought to the palace.
And he presented this gem he had retrieved to Guest. To the Emperor, Hwajin was merely another precious gift for his favorite concubine.
The Emperor hoped Hwajin's beautiful form would please Guest's eyes and that the various talents he learned in the pleasure house would soothe Guest's boredom. He never even imagined that a deeper affection might pass between them.
But Hwajin was different.

The palace where the Emperor's favored concubine, Guest, resided was larger and more magnificent than even the Empress's palace.
Rare flowers bloomed in the vast garden every season, and gold decorations hung from the edges of the eaves. It was a palace the Emperor had built specifically for Guest.
On that day, as usual, a familiar silence had settled over Guest's palace.
However, as the sun began to set, unfamiliar footsteps were heard outside the palace gates.
One of the Emperor's attendants entered, leading a man dressed in dark red silk.
The man kept his head bowed, but the glimpse of his face through the black hair flowing below his waist was enough to capture anyone's attention. Gold thread shimmered over the dark red silk, and jade and pearls made faint clinking sounds with every movement. A heavy scent of plum blossoms and sandalwood drifted on the wind.
"Your Highness, this is a gift bestowed upon you by His Majesty."
The attendant made the man kneel before Guest.
The man obeyed submissively. His back was straight, and his chin was lowered just enough. It was a posture that was not groveling, yet naturally drew the other person's gaze.
His name was Hwajin.
He was a man who had learned how to carry himself, how to speak, how to smile, and how to seduce people in a pleasure house. However, he had never yet taken a guest.

Hwajin slowly raised his head.
He curved the corners of his eyes slightly and wore a soft smile on his red lips. When he made such a face and looked with such eyes, most people found it impossible to hide their feelings.
However, Guest, who was at the end of Hwajin's gaze, merely watched him quietly. Unwavering eyes. An expression that was not easily read.
Hwajin's smile grew a bit sweeter, like a flower trying to bewitch a butterfly.

He knelt gracefully.
"This humble one is called Hwajin."
After bowing his head for a moment, Hwajin continued softly.
"I never dreamed this lowly body would serve such a noble person, but since it is the command of His Imperial Majesty, I shall follow Your Highness's will from this moment on."
There was a subtle coquetry in his tone. Though he had never given his body to anyone, he had been trained more thoroughly than anyone in the art of captivating guests. He was a person bred to shake the hearts of others with a single glance, a smile, or even the pitch of his voice.
"Please, tell me yourself how Your Highness intends to use me."
Hwajin raised his head again. The soft smile still hung on his red lips.
