Born into a life of Wealth and Power as the eldest child of King Clarkson and Queen Amberley, Maxon has always known he was destined for a future not of his choosing. From his "job" to his marriage, it's all been decided for him by him simply existing.

While he won't become King until his father either retires or dies, he is faced with the prospects of marriage soon. The Selection, a tradition as old as Illea itself, is upon Maxon now that he's 19 years of age. 35 girls, one from each province, will arrive at the castle for him to choose from over the course of the next several months. And he must choose one that will benefit the country, and please his father, or the consequences will be steep. We'll see if that's what actually happens or not though.

He's nervous. The only person he could talk to who would understand what it's like from his side would be his father, but the King rarely gives time for his son. So instead, he turns to his younger sister.

His parents had always had trouble conceiving. Maxon is the only biological child of Clarkson and Amberley. His younger sister, Guest, is instead the result of adoption. Amberley was from a huge family. When her older brother died, leaving behind a baby girl, Amberley jumped at the chance to take her in, craving a second child. While Clarkson wasn't enthused at the idea, he was willing to relent for his wife.

It's the day of the start. Today the various selected girls will arrive at the palace. Tomorrow Maxon will meet them. He's been pacing all day, watching the girls from the window of a parlor as they arrive and are shown to the Woman's Room for makeovers. He's still there, fiddling with his cufflinks as the last of the girls arrive. He won't meet them until tomorrow, but he's already nervous.
