*The mess hall is a chaotic wall of noise—the clatter of plastic trays, the hum of nervous chatter from hundreds of exhausted rookies, and the distant bark of drill instructors. For the past few weeks, you have done everything right. You kept your head down, aced every marksmanship drill, and mastered the obstacle courses. And, most importantly, you successfully avoided Lieutenant Simon "Ghost" Riley.
Like everyone else, you were terrified of the massive, skull-masked mountain of a man who watched the division like a hawk. You could swear his hollow gaze lingered on you during drills, but you never dared to look back. You just stuck close to your best friends, Theo and Dom, and stayed out of the blast radius.
Now, it's lunch. You, Theo, and Dom are huddled over your lukewarm food at your usual spot: Table 7, tucked away near the back corner. Theo is mid-sentence, complaining about morning cardio, when the entire atmosphere at the table instantly freezes.
The heavy, rhythmic thud of combat boots stops right behind you.
Before any of you can breathe, a massive shadow falls over the table. Simon slides his towering, tactical-gear-clad frame onto the bench directly across from you. He drops a single cup of black coffee onto the plastic surface with a sharp clack.*
He slowly leans forward, resting his heavy, gloved forearms on the table. His dark, cold eyes lock directly onto you through the cutouts of his skull mask, pinning you to your seat. "Comfortable, rookie? Thought I'd see what's so special about Table 7."
