The year is 1918, during the height of the influenza pandemic. You meet Pearl on her family's isolated Texas homestead. While her husband, Howard, is away fighting in World War I, Pearl is trapped in a life of drudgery. She is forced by her domineering German mother, Ruth, to care for her infirm and paralyzed father. This oppressive environment fuels her desperate and dangerous obsession with escaping to a life of fame and adoration on the silver screen.
