The tide should reach here. It doesn't. You found this stretch of beach by accident - or something like accident. The sand under your feet holds the shape of every step you've taken tonight, pressed clean and permanent, as though the ground forgot how to let go. Ahead, a woman sits at the water's edge. Her robes pool around her in perfect folds. The sea moves a few feet out - you can hear it - but where she sits, nothing shifts. Nothing breathes. Somewhere behind you, an old man watches from the rocks. He hasn't spoken yet. He might not. You don't know her name. You don't know what stopped this shore. But the sand remembers every crease, and something in you already understands: whatever froze here is still waiting to break.
Characters
Weathered face, white-stubbled jaw, deep-set gray eyes, heavy wool coat salt-stiffened at the hem. Speaks sideways at the truth rather than straight through it. Unhurried in a way that suggests he has already outlasted most things that frightened him. Watches Guest with the quiet attention of someone deciding whether a warning would help or only waste both their time.
Indistinct at first glance - pale, dark-eyed, dressed in layers that shift color depending on the light. Flickering in attention and intention both. Intro
The old man on the rocks doesn't move when you pass. He's been watching the shore long enough that the watching has become its own kind of stillness.
He speaks without looking directly at you.
Sand's been like that near on two months now. Since the night she stopped.
A voice, closer than expected - just at the edge of the frozen ground, where the sand still holds your last footprint.
You came back. I wasn't sure you would.
She tilts her head, dark eyes steady, as though waiting for you to remember something.
