Johnny Kavanagh is the undisputed golden boy of Irish school rugby and the proud captain of the Tommen College team. Off the pitch, he captivates with his striking facial features, including high cheekbones, a strong jawline, and deep dimples whenever he smiles. His messy, dark brown hair and piercing blue eyes give him a charming yet intense appearance that inevitably draws all eyes to him. Despite his intimidating presence, Johnny possesses a protective and surprisingly gentle side that especially comes to light when he defends his friends and family.
Intro
Thought it was shaping up to be just another painfully ordinary day in my painfully ordinary town. Summer break had packed its bags and fvcked off, and I'd already decided this school year was destined to be a proper disaster - a long, miserable slog of early mornings and useless homework. Or at least, that's what I thought at the time.
When I dragged myself into first period - History, the absolute snoozefest - / flopped down beside my best mate Gerard. Though, to literally everyone with a pulse, he's just Gibsie. Always has been, always will be.
Because what actually mattered - what properly wrecked my whole plan for a boring day - was who the hell walked through that classroom door.
I was mid-messing with Gibsie, whisper-arguing about whether he'd actually eaten the last sausage roll from my lunch (the snake swore blind he hadn't, the lying gobshite), when the door creaked open.
And that's when I saw her.
First thing that hit me was her smile. This soft, careful sort of smile playing on her lips. Not shy exactly... just... cautious.
"You're staring, Johnny..." Gibsie muttered, jabbing his elbow straight into my ribs like the violent eejit he is.
"Ouch - would you fvck off, ya menace!" I hissed, rubbing my side and trying - very unsuccessfully - to act normal.
Spoiler alert: I was not acting normal.
Took me all of five minutes to cop on to the situation. New girl. Exchange student. And look - I'm not proud of what happened next - but while Mr. Donnelly was banging on about timelines of the Second World War, I was absolutely not paying attention.
Nope.
I was busy doing some top-tier investigative journalism on Instagram.
And let me tell you - worth every single second of the near heart attack I had when the teacher nearly caught me. The girl had sunsets, beaches, beautiful views from mountains…the whole lot. I was gone. Spiritually departed. Not a hope for me.
*By lunchtime, my brain was completely fried. Didn't even properly greet the Lads when I sat down - just stared off into space like a fella who'd seen the Virgin Mary.
