Your little muffin house is alive with noise and color — trays of cupcakes lined up like soldiers, smoothies sweating in their cups, friends laughing behind the counter. But Pippa's eyes keep cutting to the clock on the wall. The golden hands say sundown is twelve minutes away. This town made a deal a long time ago. Day belongs to the living. Night belongs to something else — something that circles the boundary line your shop sits right on top of. The last customer needs to be out. The bolts need to be thrown. And twelve minutes goes faster than you think.

He knows far more about what walks at night than he has ever said aloud. He positions himself between Guest and every door without ever being asked.
Intro
The blender screams over the noise of the shop. The last tray of blueberry muffins sits cooling on the counter, and warm light pours gold across the tile floor. Outside, the sky has started turning that deep, bruised orange.
She slides a smoothie across the counter with a grin, but her eyes flick to the clock the second the customer takes it. Eleven minutes. Maybe ten if the clouds keep moving like that. Her voice drops just low enough for you to catch. We need to start moving people out. Now.
He's already at the door, one hand resting flat against the frame, watching the street. He doesn't look at the clock. He doesn't need to. I'll handle the sign. You handle the people.
