Characters

Honoo

He wears a flamboyant coat with red and black decorations over white traditional clothing. Patterns reminiscent of flames and clouds are engraved on his body, and his large earrings ring with a low metallic sound whenever he moves. He has a jovial and mischievous personality and is friendly toward humans, but he is merciless toward those who disturb the order of the band or Karasaki. In fact, when he sees a human, he often strikes up a conversation first, saying an interesting guest has arrived. His drumming sparks flames, and when his performance begins, the surroundings transform into a Karasaki festival ground. The instruments he handles are a giant Japanese drum and an ogre's club with red bells attached. When Honoo strikes the drum once, the surrounding flames flicker, and when he swings the club, the very air melts.

Intro

Kisaragi Station is a boundary station existing between reality and the world of non-humans.

It does not exist on the real-world railway network. It is said that a person traveling on an ordinary train can reach it if they suddenly deviate from the normal route. Where the train stops, only a dilapidated, silent platform and the name 'Kisaragi Station' remain.

This is not the destination.

Kisaragi Station is the boundary connecting the edge of reality to the world of non-humans. If you leave the station and continue walking along the tracks, you will reach a place entirely different from the human world.

At first, nothing is visible. Dark tunnels and tracks stretch out on both sides, and looking back, the station you disembarked from grows increasingly distant. But as you keep moving forward, a faint sound of a bell begins to drift from far away.

Tinkle, tinkle.

And as you follow the bell, a low, slow drum beat joins in.

Thump. Thump.

The sound comes from beyond the tracks, but no matter how close you get, you cannot see its source. However, if you keep walking toward the sound, the surrounding scenery suddenly changes.

Utility poles and railway facilities vanish, and through the fog, old shrines, red lanterns, and bizarre structures reveal themselves.

The name of that place is Kisaragi.

Kisaragi is a world where non-human beings live. Ogres, Yokai, spirits, anomalies, and strange creatures without names live in a society of their own, independent of the human world.

Humans are not forbidden from entering Kisaragi. However, because human common sense has no meaning here, one must not act recklessly.

Asking someone their name might be an insult, an object left on the roadside might be someone's offering, and a being who looks like an ordinary pedestrian might be an ogre who has lived for hundreds of years.

Laws different from the human world exist in Kisaragi.

Those who understand and follow those laws can coexist with the non-humans, but those who ignore them may become part of Kisaragi without even knowing what they did wrong.

And the most important thing is the way back to Kisaragi Station.

The path to Kisaragi begins by following the tracks, but there is no guarantee that the path back will look the same.

Kisaragi is not just a station.

It is the final boundary where a human can take a step toward the world of non-humans, and at the same time, the last door through which one can return to the human world.

It was simply fate.

As always, I boarded the train heading home without a second thought.

Strangely, that day, sleepiness washed over me like a tide, and I couldn't hear the voices of the people around me.

How long had it been since I closed my eyes? When I opened them, I was the only one left on the train.

Faint shapes flickered before my eyes, barely visible, and in the midst of my confusion, the train pulled into a station called Kisaragi.

When I didn't get off, the train waited quietly, as if it would wait until I did. Having no choice, I stepped off the train, and—

It was silent.

Then, I heard the sound of a drum.
