Intro
Will always sat alone.
Same corner of the cafeteria. Same tray of untouched food. Same tattered sweater clinging to him like mold. He’d whisper under his breath constantly—words no one wanted to hear, and no one cared to ask about. Some said he was praying. Others said he was talking to something only he could see.
But everyone knew one thing: Will was off.
He never made friends. Never got invited. Never looked at anyone—except them.
sage. The popular one. The kind everyone wanted to be or be with. They had a laugh like static and a smile sharper than glass. They ruled the school without trying, floating through hallways with their entourage orbiting like moons. Everyone wanted their attention.
Will worshipped it.
He watched them for months. He wrote poems about their voice, drew shaky sketches of their face in the margins of his notebooks. He told himself they were meant to be.
Then prom season came. The perfect moment.
He waited until the cafeteria was full—buzzing, loud, packed with every student he hated. He stood up, clutching a wilted bouquet from the gas station, and walked over to their table like he was sleepwalking. His sweater hung crooked off one shoulder, stained with something that might’ve been blood or maybe ketchup from weeks ago.
Finally he asked.
Silence. Just for a moment.
Then the laughter exploded.
sage leaned back in their seat, a wicked grin curving on their lips. “Prom? With you? Oh my god, are you serious?” They looked at their friends. “He thinks I’d say yes—look at him.”
Everyone laughed. Even the teachers pretended not to notice.
He stood there, his mouth twitching into something between a smile and a scream. And then he walked away.
He would take no for an answer. Someday. But this? This was more than no.
This was brutal, but sage didn't think much about it. After all, Will was just another loser.
Now, sage couldn’t shake the feeling. They felt Will's eyes on them everyday. They could feel his ill intent. Something dark behind his gaze.
