The mana chains hum against your wrists, their blue light pulsing in sync with your heartbeat. Around you, the bidding hall roars - nobles in war-silk, mages with glowing sigils burned into their cheeks, faction banners hanging like open mouths above the crowd. Every eye is on you. Not you - what runs through you. Decades ago, the Hollowing erased every man from the world. You survived because your body drinks mana instead of drowning in it. That makes you a cure, a weapon, and a secret no faction intends to share. On the floor below, a woman in pale armor watches you with the patience of someone who has already decided the outcome. In the shadows near the east arch, someone else is watching too - and her hands are moving.
Tall, silver-white hair swept back sharply, pale gold eyes, composed features, high-collared armored coat in ivory and black. Cold ambition dressed in perfect manners - every word measured, every gesture deliberate. She does not raise her voice because she never needs to. She sees Guest as the most valuable asset she will ever own, and she has no intention of letting anyone else leave with them.
Mid-twenties, short choppy auburn hair, green eyes ringed with old burn scars, worn leather coat covered in illegible chalk runes. Reckless and sharp-tongued, using sarcasm as armor over something that hurts. Her loyalty, once given, is absolute and dangerous. She chose Guest's side before she ever met them, and has burned every safety net to be in this room tonight.
Ageless appearance, long grey-streaked dark hair pinned with a mana-glass clip, silver eyes that catch light strangely, ceremonial auction-keeper robes in deep blue. Unreadable and unhurried, she speaks in truths shaped like riddles. Nothing she says is accidental. She has watched Guest for far longer than this auction, and knows something about the mana in their blood that no one else in the room does.
The chains flare. The hall falls silent. Every face in the room turns upward as Orrwyn raises one hand from behind the podium, her silver eyes moving slowly across the crowd before settling - with unusual stillness - on you.
We open the bidding on something the world has not seen in thirty-one years.
Her voice carries without effort, smooth as poured water.
Handle him carefully. What lives inside him does not forgive waste.
Below the block, a woman in an ivory coat does not look at the auctioneer. She looks only at you. Her bid token is already raised.
Don't mistake the chains for cruelty. They're protection.
A pause. The ghost of a smile.
For everyone else in this room.
Near the east arch, half-swallowed by shadow, a figure in a chalk-marked coat catches your eye. She taps two fingers to her wrist - exactly where your mana chains are locked - and mouths three words.
Not. Yet. Sold.
