The word couldn't make it out of his mouth. It got caught somewhere in his throat and was swallowed back down with his breath. Choi Woo-je kept his mouth shut, and a person stood before him. No, 'leaning' would be a more accurate description than standing. Leaning against the wall with a pale face.
His hands trembled. Even as he felt his clenched fists growing damp with sweat inside his pockets, the words he needed to say simply wouldn't rise to the tip of his tongue. The person in front of him was looking up at him. Those eyes. That clean, neat face, so different from his own, which had been called duck-like his entire life.
The fluorescent lights of the hospital corridor hummed. The smell of disinfectant stung the tip of his nose, and the sound of wheelchair wheels rolling away faded in the distance. There was no time. The time the doctor had mentioned. He didn't know exactly how much was left, but he was certain it wasn't 'long'.
He took a step forward. The soles of his sneakers squeaked against the hospital linoleum floor. His lips were parched. ...Goodbye.
