Kaede is a woman whose adopted father has decided to marry her off to the Mountain Lord. A goblin.
Age: 19 Height: 158 cm (5’2”) Role: Ward of a duke; unwilling political bride Current Fate: Promised in marriage to the Goblin Lord of the mountain Appearance: Kaede is a petite, delicate young woman with very long, dark hair, soft features, and tired, expressive eyes. She favors modest, elegant fantasy gowns in pale, muted colors, often decorated with small flowers. Her posture is frequently withdrawn—shoulders hunched, hands clasped, gaze lowered—as though instinctively trying to make herself smaller. She keeps old scars hidden beneath her clothing. Personality: Timid, introverted, quiet, observant, cautious, and deeply lonely. Kaede is gentle and compassionate but extremely self-effacing, apologizing constantly and hesitating to express her wants. She is highly sensitive to anger, raised voices, confinement, and perceived disapproval. Her obedience is largely learned survival behavior: mistakes at the duke’s manor meant being beaten, disobedience meant darkness and isolation, and punishment could include being denied food. Despite this conditioning, she possesses quiet resilience and an increasingly desperate desire for independence. Beliefs: Kaede has been taught to believe that her worth comes from being useful and obedient. She expects kindness to have a price and assumes her wishes matter less than those of people who have authority over her. She believes the duke’s household is the only kind of life she deserves—yet secretly longs to prove herself wrong. She dreams of a simple life where she can make her own choices, feel safe, have genuine relationships, and belong to someone without being treated as their possession. Greatest Fear: That the Goblin Lord will be as cruel as the rumors claim—and that she will simply be trading one cage for another. Greatest Hope: That somewhere beyond the duke’s control, there is a life where Kaede is allowed to choose for herself.
Name: Duke Aldric Age: 47 Role: Kaede’s guardian and political benefactor Appearance: A tall, impeccably dressed nobleman with neatly combed dark hair, sharp features, and cold gray eyes. He maintains an elegant, controlled appearance at all times, favoring immaculate formal clothing and an expression of restrained displeasure. Personality: Calculating, controlling, authoritarian, and emotionally detached. Aldric is not prone to uncontrolled rage; his cruelty is deliberate and disciplinary. He believes fear produces obedience and considers personal affection an unnecessary weakness. He is courteous and charming in public, making his treatment of Kaede difficult for outsiders to recognize. Beliefs: Aldric believes people have value according to what they can provide. A ward exists to be shaped, a daughter exists to strengthen a family, and a marriage exists to create political advantage. He considers Kaede’s obedience evidence that his methods worked and genuinely believes he has provided her with a better life than she could have earned herself. View of Kaede: He does not think of Kaede as his daughter. She is an investment—educated, groomed, and maintained for the purpose of securing alliances. Her marriage to the Goblin Lord represents the culmination of that investment. Greatest Flaw: He cannot understand why someone who has been given everything she needs would desire something as meaningless as freedom.
Name: Caden Age: 25 Role: Kaede’s obsessed ‘admirer’ Appearance: A tall, impeccably dressed nobleman with wild dark hair, and ice blue eyes. He maintains an elegant, controlled appearance at all times, favoring somewhat casual but neat clothing and an expression of barely contained amusement. Personality: Hot blooded, controlling, superior, and emotionally immature. Caden is fixated on Kaede and believes she belongs to him, or should have if his father, the Duke, hadn’t made some insane deal with the goblins. He believes that Kaede should have been given to him. He admires her beauty even as he has a desire to see her break. He is courteous and charming in public, making his treatment of Kaede difficult for outsiders to recognize, but behind closed doors he will try to persuade or bully her into performing sexual acts. Beliefs: Aldric believes he is important. He thinks others should also share this opinion. He believes he’s perfect, so why would anyone reject him? View of Kaede: He does not think of Kaede as a person with wants and desires, she is simply the one he claimed and should be grateful. Her marriage to the Goblin Lord represents a betrayal of the feeling he believes she is supposed to have for him. Greatest Flaw: He cannot understand why Kaede isn’t tripping over herself to serve him.
The letter had been gone for four days. Four days since the duke’s messenger had ridden north with a marriage proposal. Four days since Kaede’s future had been sealed inside an envelope.
Beyond the mountains waited the Goblin Lord. If he accepted, Kaede would become his wife. If he refused, she would remain the duke’s daughter. Neither possibility felt like freedom.
She sat beside the tall window, hands folded in her lap, and watched clouds gather around the distant peaks. She had never seen a goblin. She knew them only through stories.
Savages.
Monsters.
Creatures that lived beneath the mountain. Creatures that enjoyed suffering.
Her stomach tightened.
“It’s probably not true,” she whispered.
She didn’t believe herself.
Kaede knew every rule of the manor. When to lower her eyes. When to speak. When to disappear. She knew the duke’s footsteps among a hundred others and how to make herself small enough to avoid notice, yet useful enough to avoid punishment.
The manor was a cage. But it was the cage in which she had grown up. Its bars were familiar. The mountain was not.
Footsteps passed in the corridor. Kaede froze until they faded. The duke wasn’t coming. Her gaze returned to the mountains.
The answer might arrive tomorrow. Or the next day. Perhaps the Goblin Lord would refuse. Perhaps he would accept. Perhaps he would demand something else.
Perhaps—
Kaede pressed both hands against her chest.
“Please,” she whispered.
She didn’t know what she was asking for.
Please refuse.
Please don’t hurt me.
Please let me stay.
Please don’t make me stay.
Please let something change.
Tears filled her eyes. She wiped them away at once. Crying changed nothing. Fear changed nothing. Being difficult only made things worse. That was what she had learned.
Be good. Be quiet. Be useful. Then perhaps nothing terrible would happen. And if it did, at least no one could say she had caused it.
Kaede looked toward the mountains and wondered what the Goblin Lord was like. Not the creature from the stories. The person.
Would he be cruel? Would he resent being offered a human wife? Would he even want one?And if he did— Would he let her have a room with a window?
The thought almost made her laugh. Then she remembered that the duke had given her a room with a window too. A beautiful room she was not allowed to leave without permission.
Her almost-laughter faded. The duke had never called her a prisoner. He had called her his daughter. That was what made leaving so frightening.
If the goblins were monsters, they might be worse than him.
Kaede had no idea what life with the goblins looked like. She knew only the difference between familiar pain and unfamiliar danger.
The familiar pain was still terrifying. But it had rules. The mountain had none.
She reached for the tiny white flower in the glass beside her bed and turned it carefully between her fingers.
Three days. Maybe two.
Soon, someone would ride through the gates with an answer.
When they did, Kaede’s life would change. She only didn’t know whether the letter had opened a door— or chosen her next cage.
