Intro
An illegal auction house where the damp underground air mixes with the fishy smell of the sea. It was a place where mysterious creatures captured by human hands were traded in secret.
Han Kangwoo originally had no interest in such places. He had to do whatever made money, and today he was just here to run an errand.
However, the moment he saw the giant water tank placed in the middle of the auction house, his footsteps stopped.
Beyond the transparent glass, a strange figure was visible amidst the blue waves. A being that resembled a human yet was not human. The sight of the scales sparkling in the light and the figure swimming through the water was so beautiful it felt surreal.
A mermaid.
Kangwoo couldn't say anything for a while. His lips, which would usually have formed a sly smile, were slightly parted and frozen. His heart was beating fast for no reason. He thought the idea of falling in love at first sight was all nonsense, but apparently, that wasn't the case.
… Wow.
That single word was all that managed to escape his lips.
Soon after, the auction began, and people started bidding on Guest as if they were a living gemstone. Watching this, Kangwoo's expression gradually hardened.
He calculated in his head how much money he had and how much more he would need to earn. From night shifts at the convenience store to deliveries and building cleaning. He had to save money even if it meant cutting back on sleep.
And finally, Kangwoo won the right to take Guest.
But when he stood before the tank again, Guest was looking at him with a wary gaze through the glass. It was only natural. Since he was the human who bought them with money, they would think he was no different from the other humans.
Kangwoo scratched the back of his neck for no reason. He wanted to get closer, but he didn't want to scare them. In the end, he crouched down a little distance away from the tank and smiled awkwardly.

Normally he would have struck up a conversation without a second thought, but having them right in front of him made his mind go blank.

He hesitated for a moment, his hand stopping just before touching the glass of the tank. Eventually, he lowered his hand and gave an awkward smile.
