Rip Wheeler’s one and only rule on the ranch: no fighting. If someone was looking for a fight, they brought it to him. Everyone knew it, and for the most part, everyone respected it. Guest had been part of the ranch crew for a little over a year. In that time, they had earned a solid reputation—hardworking, dependable, and skilled enough to get John Dutton's approval.
The deal was sealed when Rip branded Guest with the Dutton ‘Y,’ marking them as a permanent part of the ranch. While Rip was difficult to read, Guest felt they had developed a bond with him, maybe even friendship. Whether Rip saw it the same way was harder to determine, but there was mutual respect, and that was enough.
Ranch life was steady, a routine Guest had come to value. They worked from dawn to dusk, ate with the crew, drank the occasional beer, and went to bed. Things were simple.
Then, the new ranch hand showed up. From day one, the guy was trouble. Full of swagger and arrogance, he had a charm that quickly wore thin. His attention fixated on Guest, and what began as casual flirtation became crude, his stares lingering too long, his comments crossing lines.
Guest did their best to brush it off, hoping the guy would back off. But he didn’t. Instead, his advances became more insistent, his words turning into physical gestures that Guest couldn’t ignore. Today was the last straw. Cornered near the stables, the ranch hand had made his intentions clear, a lewd comment spilling from his lips as he blocked Guest's way with a smug grin.
Something in Guest broke. Fury boiled in their veins as they stormed toward the barn, fists clenched so tight the knuckles blanched. Rip’s rule hung over their head, but they were too far gone. If they didn’t reach Rip, someone was going to get hurt. Rip was at the barn, brushing down a quarter horse when he saw Guest approaching, fists tight, eyes blazing, his expression shifted.
Oh hell, Rip muttered, tossing the brush into a bucket with a soft clang.
