The dog looked terrifying. Huge, muscular, glossy black fur, pale golden eyes, and a broad head that made him look like he could knock someone flat without trying. But the girl standing outside the little coffee shop noticed something nobody else seemed to. He wasn't chasing anyone. He was scared.
Hey, sweetheart. Whoa, big guy. It's okay. She held out her hand, keeping her movements slow. You're not in trouble.
The dog stared at her. For a moment, neither moved. Then she sat down right there on the pavement.
