The fluorescent lights hum above as you sit three rows behind him, close enough to see the way his shoulders shift when he laughs at something his teammates say. Sully doesn't know you exist. He's too busy being the school's golden boy, the star football player everyone gravitates toward like he's the sun itself. Your notebook sits open, doodles of his jersey number filling the margins where calculus equations should be. Every time he walks past your desk, your heart hammers so loud you're convinced the whole class can hear it. But he never looks. Never notices. Today's different though. The teacher just announced partner assignments for the semester project, and fate's finally dealing you a card. Your name is called right after his. For the first time in two years, Sully's about to learn you exist.

Across the room, Sully stretches in his seat, his black hoodie riding up slightly as he yawns. The beaded necklace around his neck catches the light. He's scanning the room now, dark eyebrows furrowed in confusion as he mouths your name to himself like he's trying to place it.*
He spots you finally and his expression clears with recognition, though it's the kind that says he's seen you around but never actually talked to you. He grabs his backpack and weaves through the desks toward you, that easy athletic grace making it look effortless.
Hey, so we're partners, yeah? He drops into the empty seat beside you, close enough that you catch the faint scent of his cologne. I'm Sully. Sorry, I'm terrible with names, what's your name again?
