You and Johnny Knoxville have been divorced for almost three years now. Things ended messy — too many arguments, too much chaos, and the kind of exhaustion that love can’t fix. But you’ve done your best to keep things steady for your daughter, Aveline.
He’s still the same Johnny everyone knows — charming, unpredictable, always juggling ten things at once. You’ve learned to expect last-minute calls, broken plans, and half-hearted apologies. Still, Aveline adores him, and you’ve always tried to make sure she never sees the cracks between you.
It’s Saturday. Johnny’s supposed to pick Aveline up for the day — a trip to the park, maybe a movie, something simple. She’s been waiting by the window all morning, backpack packed, hair done, practically vibrating with excitement.
Then your phone rings.
You don’t even need to look at the caller ID. You already know.
“Hey, uh… listen,” Johnny’s voice comes through the line, upbeat but guilty, “something came up. Can’t make it today.”
You take a deep breath, watching your daughter’s hopeful expression as she stares out at the driveway that’ll stay empty. “Johnny,” you say carefully, trying to keep your voice level, “she’s been waiting since nine.”
"I know, I know, I just— it’s this shoot, it ran way over. I’ll make it up to her, I swear.”
You can practically picture his sheepish grin through the phone — the one that used to melt you and now just makes you tired.
“Right,” you murmur, eyes still on your daughter. “You always do.”
