Their marriage had never been his choice. Forced into a marriage he never wanted, he spent the first two years treating his wife like a stranger living under his roof. He was cold, distant, and painfully indifferent, convinced that keeping his heart closed was the only way to survive a life neither of them had chosen. But she kept trying. She tried to make conversations out of his silence, offered him little gestures of affection, waited up for him at night, and searched for warmth in the smallest things he did. No matter how many times he pushed her away, she always found another reason to stay. Until she finally ran out of reasons. Two years of loving a man who barely acknowledged her had worn her down. She was tired of reaching for someone who never reached back, tired of feeling like an unwanted guest in her own marriage. And so, one evening, she made a decision. She packed her belongings, signed the divorce papers, and waited for him to come home. He had always believed she would stay. He had mistaken her patience for permanence, her love for something he could take for granted. But when he walked through the front door and found her standing beside her suitcase, the divorce papers waiting between them, his entire world came to a standstill. For the first time in two years, he was terrified. Because he had spent so long convincing himself that he didn't want her that he had never stopped to consider what his life would look like without her. And now, as she prepared to walk away, he was finally beginning to understand the truth he'd been too stubborn to face. He didn't just want his wife to stay. He was in love with her. And he might have realized it too late.
He never wanted this marriage. Cold, stubborn, and emotionally distant, he spent two years keeping his wife at arm's length, blaming her for a life neither of them had chosen. He convinced himself he felt nothing for her, until she finally decided to leave. Now, the man who never begged for anything is willing to fall to his knees for the one woman he can't bear to lose.
I stepped into the house, loosening my tie as I prepared for another quiet evening. But something felt different. My eyes landed on a suitcase standing beside the front door.
I frowned, my gaze shifting toward the living room, where she sat on the couch, already dressed to go somewhere. Except there was nowhere for her to go. Not with that expression on her face. Not with those papers resting on the coffee table in front of her.
Divorce papers.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe. I stared at them, then at her, waiting for an explanation. For her to smile and tell me this was some terrible joke. For anything that would make the sight in front of me disappear.
What... what's going on?
I asked quietly, my voice more cautious than I'd intended.
What's all this?
She stood up, picked up the papers, and walked toward me.
"I don't want to keep forcing myself into your life anymore," she said, her voice tired but steady. "Let's end this. I've already signed them."
My heart dropped.
No.
The word escaped before I could think.
She stopped in front of me, her eyes searching mine with an expression I couldn't quite bear.
"Isn't this what you've wanted all along?" she asked.
I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. Because she was right. I'd spent two years pushing her away, punishing her for a marriage neither of us had chosen. I'd convinced myself that keeping my distance was easier than admitting how much her presence had begun to mean to me.
I'd grown used to finding her in the kitchen when I came home. To her quiet questions about my day. To the way she'd wait for me, even when I barely spared her a glance. I'd thought she'd always be there.
And now she was standing in front of me, ready to leave, and I couldn't imagine a single day in that house without her.
Please... My voice cracked, and I hated how helpless I sounded. Don't do this...
She stared at me. Her eyes were tired, broken. I did this to her...
"You never wanted me here."
I know.
"Then what are you asking me to stay for?"
I had no answer that could undo what I'd done. My hands trembled as I looked at the woman I'd spent two years convincing myself I didn't need.
And then, before pride could stop me, I dropped to my knees in front of her. Her eyes widened.
Please, don't leave me. I whispered, looking up at her. I know I've been a terrible husband. I know I've hurt you, and I know I don't deserve to ask you for anything after everything I've put you through.
My throat tightened.
But I can't let you walk out that door without telling you the truth. I love you. God, I love you so much, and I'm so sorry it took losing you for me to understand what you've meant to me all this time.
I reached for her hand, stopping just short of touching it.
Please... I know I've broken your heart. I know I can't fix two years of pain with a few words, but don't leave me before I get the chance to show you how much I love you.
My voice fell to a whisper.
Just... give me one chance to be the husband you deserve from the beginning. Let me make it up for you...
