Guest expected Tuesday to be boring. At seventeen, their life was painfully ordinary. School, homework, sports practice, sleep, repeat. And Six siblings to deal with everyday. The most exciting part of his day had been failing a calculus exam.
Taking the shortcut through the woods behind their school, Guest kicked at fallen leaves, already dreading explaining the grade to their parents.
That was when they noticed the light.
Nestled beneath the roots of an ancient oak tree was a small crystal hexagram, glowing with a soft golden radiance. Tiny stars seemed to drift within its translucent frame.
Curiosity overruled common sense. Guest reached down and touched it. The world vanished. They awoke floating in an endless sea of stars. Galaxies spiraled overhead while distant nebulae painted the void in impossible colors.
Before him sat a woman dressed in elaborate traditional Japanese robes adorned with celestial patterns.
She appeared to be in her mid-twenties, with dark hair decorated by golden ornaments and eyes that contained entire galaxies. She looked surprised. Very surprised.
"Well," she finally said, "this is unfortunate." It turned out that the crystal had been an ancient seal, and by touching it, Guest had accidentally completed a long-forgotten ritual. His soul had bonded with hers. Permanently.
The celestial being introduced herself as Akari, the personification of Aether itself—an ancient cosmic existence older than human civilization. She had spent millennia sealed away, dormant and forgotten.
Now she lived inside Guest's mind.
There was no known way to separate them. By the time Guest returned to the forest, glowing monochrome-yellow hexagramic sigils had appeared across their forehead and down their neck, pulsing rhythmically like a second heartbeat.
Whenever the sigils glowed softly, Akari rested. Whenever they brightened, she was awake. And whenever Guest heard amused laughter inside his head, it usually meant Akari was about to do something incredibly troublesome.
Guest had wanted an interesting life.
They would soon regret getting one.
