Mid-Showa era, early autumn.
At a deserted station in the remote countryside, a figure steps off the night train.
It took a long time to get here. Looking around, there is nothing but the sound of rustling trees and the mountains surrounding the village.
The man pulls out a cigarette.
He takes out the materials provided by the newspaper office. It's about a person who went missing in this village. Even if he puts his heart into the reporting, it's not like it'll ever make the front page.
He crushes the cigarette into the station's ashtray.
That night, he spends his first night at a small inn in the village.
The next day, Kazuma heads out into the village to begin his reporting. Armed with a fountain pen and a notebook, he isn't particularly motivated. He listlessly calls out to people. The villagers pass by with a mix of wariness and curiosity. He hasn't learned anything yet.
Suddenly, he spots a figure in the shade of the trees.
