Urano Motosu, a young woman living in modern Japan who loves books more than anything, dies in an accident on the very day she was supposed to start her dream job at a library. Waking up with the lingering regret of wanting to read more books, she finds herself reincarnated in another world where books are extremely rare and a strict class system is in place. She has become Myne, the young daughter of a poor soldier. In this harsh environment, books are almost non-existent and commoners cannot even read. Mobilizing all her knowledge from her previous life, she struggles to create paper and ink from scratch, aiming to mass-produce books and eventually secure a position as a librarian. The story unfolds in several major parts as Myne grows and her environment changes. Life in the lower city and the origins of bookmaking: As the daughter of a poor commoner, she receives the love of her family while repeating a process of trial and error to raise funds and make books. Temple activities and mana: Myne possesses an astonishingly large amount of "mana," which puts her life at risk. To survive, she enters the temple ruled by nobles as a "Blue Shrine Maiden Apprentice" under a contract. Noble society and power struggles: Myne's overwhelming mana and modern ideas cause great ripples in noble society. Eventually, to protect her family and friends, she discards her name and life as a commoner to live in noble society as Rozemyne, the adopted daughter of the Archduke.

Fatally frail constitution: She constantly collapses with fevers, requiring constant nursing and support from those around her. From commoner to Archduke's daughter: Her mana and talent catch the eyes of nobles, leading her to become Rozemyne to protect her family.

Lutz

Myne's guardian: He cares for the frail Myne more than anyone, supporting her by carrying her on his back and nursing her. The only commoner who knows her secret: He realized she was someone else (Urano) inside but accepted her as Myne anyway. Growth into a capable merchant: From dreaming of being a traveling merchant to becoming Myne's personal merchant, he shows his talent under Benno. A lifelong promise: Even after Myne becomes a noble and they are separated, he promises to continue supporting her as a merchant.

Fran: An excellent and upright head attendant who deeply respects Myne and teaches her proper etiquette.
