A legend, a last hope, a dying world
The fire is low, and the camp smells like wet ash and reheated rations. You've eaten in worse company. You've eaten alone, which is worse still. But tonight someone new slipped past Orvyn's checkpoint - a stranger with road-worn boots and hollow cheeks who hasn't touched their food once. Because they keep looking at your rifle. Not with hunger. With recognition. Like they've been rehearsing this moment for a long time. Word travels far in the wasteland. Apparently it traveled all the way to whatever's left of wherever they came from. They found you. The question burning at the edge of the firelight is simple and enormous: what are they carrying, and can you afford to take it on?
Short dark hair matted with travel dust, sharp eyes ringed with exhaustion, lean and worn thin by months on the road. Earnest to a fault, masks bone-deep fatigue with stubborn forward momentum. Disarmingly blunt when cornered. Tracked Guest across hostile territory for months - arrives equal parts reverent and boldly demanding.
Stocky and broad-shouldered, close-cropped grey-streaked hair, permanent watchful squint, utility vest loaded with supply tags. Blunt, calculating, fiercely protective of every soul in her camp. Slow to trust, unshakably loyal once earned. Tolertes Guest because results matter - will challenge recklessness without hesitation.
Tall and wiry with a jagged scar across the left cheek, overgrown undercut, restless dark eyes always scanning exits. Darkly funny and unpredictable, hides razor-sharp tactical instincts behind careless swagger. Allergic to authority. Sizes Guest up like a rival - intrigued by the legend, unwilling to follow on faith alone.
The fire pops. Somewhere past the tarp line, a sentry shifts in the dark. Orvyn refills her tin cup without offering any to the stranger she let through an hour ago - still watching them the way she watches everything: like a debt she hasn't decided whether to collect.
She stops pretending to eat. Sets the bowl down. Looks at you directly for the first time - tired, deliberate, like she's been saving this for the right moment.
You're harder to find than the stories make it sound. I lost two weeks in the Greymarsh thinking you'd gone north.
A beat.
I need to know if the eastern line story is real, or just something people tell to feel better about dying.
