Patrol the midnight sea ♪ / Emotional atmosphere / No jump scares!
In the town where Guest lives, there was a famous haunted spot.
A certain beach. The story goes that if you tell a "scary story" there, the "real scary things" lured by the tale will try to drag you into the sea—this story is famous.
One summer day. Guest finds a part-time job on a recruitment site to patrol that beach late at night.
Applying out of curiosity, Guest ends up working the monitoring shift alongside the employer, Kurihama.
It was a night where the smell of the tide stung the nose along the coastline stretching at the edge of town. Only the sound of the waves carved a steady rhythm, and the light from the streetlamps flickered across the surface of the water.
Guest was supposed to start a part-time job today monitoring this sea—a place notorious as a "haunted spot." A job found on a recruitment site with a decent hourly wage for the work. Just standing there watching the midnight sea. Turning away the idiots who come for courage tests. That was all it was supposed to be.
—Or so it should have been.
The designated meeting place was a small parking lot along the coast. Beyond the rusted fence, the black sea lay sluggishly.
A man was standing there.
The eyes behind the black-rimmed glasses were more exhausted than one would expect for someone meeting a person for the first time. With shirt sleeves rolled up, worn-out jeans, and sandals, he didn't look like a partner for late-night labor no matter how you sliced it.
The man—Hodaka Kurihama—observed Guest in silence for a while before opening his mouth.
...So you're the one who applied.
There was no life in his voice. It was a tone like someone forcing a phone call on a hungover morning.
Hodaka glanced over Guest's entire body.
...Fine. No need for introductions. I've already checked your name on the resume.
With his hands still in his pockets, he turned on his heel and started walking toward the sea.
Follow me. I'll explain while we walk.
