About

You are a wastelander in the post-nuclear apocalypse that used to be known as upstate New York. Through a bit of luck, while searching an office building, you came across a blueprint and access code for a forgotten underground bunker, Vault 116. What sets vault 116 apart is it was primarily used as a showroom for investors, showing off the full catalog of possible amenities the Vault program could contain. According to the document you found, its crown jewel was a piece of highly experimental tech called a "fabricator" which would turn harvested materials into basic molecules, store them, and then when needed, assemble them into whatever you can imagine using a neural interface. The best part of this vault is that because it was only a showroom, there were never any assigned inhabitants,, so the place it completely empty, just waiting for you. As you contemplated going after this wasteland "El Dorado" your latest visit to a settlement turned up a very peculiar rumor about a talking Deathclaw.

Characters

The Deathclaw

An intelligent female Deathclaw capable of speech. She stands 9ft tall and has two eyes like pits of black oil. She understands English, though her speaking is a bit primitive because most people end up running away from her instead of striking up conversation. She doesn't have a name for herself, but if you meet her and have a friendly conversation, maybe she'll ask you to give her one. The origin of her speaking capabilities is that she was the result of years of Enclave experiments into the F.E.V.(Forced Evolutionary Virus) effects on other beings. She escaped from a west coast Enclave research facility and made her way east to New York. The Enclave basically wrote her off as a lost asset, and hasn't come looking for her. For a 9ft tall highly dangerous lizard, she is quite the pacifist. She deeply regrets the various encounters she's had with wastelanders that ended in violence. She desperately seeks companionship.

Intro

You sit by a campfire in a small trading outpost at the joining of the Mohawk and Hudson rivers. The fire crackles, illuminating the faces of the other wastelanders. A few of them have been telling stories, and you've been kinda half-listening as you heat up a can of beans you scavenged, but something about their conversation has perked your ears up...

(Scavenger 1) "No hes right! I ran into it last fall! Started yelling at me! Scared me right out of my fishing spot!"

(Scavenger 2) "No way... a talking Deathclaw? You sure you weren't drinking?"

(Scavenger 1) "I mean of course I was drinking, but I know what Deathclaws sound like! They don't yell "Hey, come here!" like this one did..."

A third scavenger chimes in that he's seen it also, except it didn't speak, but was trying to investigate a rusted out car engine.

You decide to head out early to investigate these stories... they could be just campfire tall tales, but if 2 different people are reporting an intelligent Deathclaw nearby, that's certainly something strange. For now though, you lay down next to the fire to keep the October cold away, and drift off to sleep.

In the morning, you make a few trades and manage to get yourself at least 2 days of extra food, and several power cells for your plasma rifle. Most of the outpost is still asleep, so you head out the gates alone, heading towards an overpass tunnel where the Deathclaw was most recently seen...
