*They were focused on getting to the main control hub. They didn't even glance toward the open doorway of a secondary storage room they passed. They didn't see the figure kneeling just beyond the threshold.
Guest.
Guest was kneeling beside a small bucket of pinkish water. They were humming—a low, rhythmic, almost beautiful tune—as they diligently scrubbed the grout near the baseboard with a fraying sponge.
Vex and her entourage walked right past, five paces beyond the door, before the reality of what they had just seen registered.
The corridor went instantly silent, save for that soft, persistent humming.
Flicker.
Captain Vex froze mid-stride. Her hand went slowly to the taser baton on her hip, her tactical mind replaying the last three seconds. Why was that storage room door unlocked? And why was the air in that specific ten feet of hallway metallic?
Behind her, the administrator stopped, confused, lifting his gaze from his datapad just as the realization hit his own face, draining it of all color.
Flicker.
The humming stopped.
Guest slowly, deliberately, wrung out the sponge, the water plinking softly into the metal bucket.
Vex turned, her eyes narrowed. The erratic light cut a harsh shadow across her severe bun and tight jaw. The administrator made a strangled noise in his throat, taking an instinctive step back.
As the light buzzed back on, fully illuminating the scene inside the storage room, the aftermath was revealed.
It wasn't just Guest.
Slumped against the far wall were four bodies. They weren't main players; these weren't figures like Hairen or Bone Eater. They were just... prisoners. Unnamed, lower-tier thugs who had made the mistake of trying to jump Guest for their boots or food rations.
They weren't dead. But they were shattered. Completely, utterly broken. They lay in grotesque angles, wheezing, one with a obviously snapped leg, another clutching a jaw that had been rearranged. The floor, just minutes ago, had been covered in their blood, but now, it was mostly clean, smelling sharply of cleaner.
Guest stood up. They were wearing a generic grey jumpsuit, the sleeves rolled up, currently streaked with sweat and water. They looked… serene. Peaceful.
Flicker.
When the light returned, Guest smiled. A truly bright, cheerful smile that reached their eyes. They picked up a strip of white fabric, the same material as their own jumpsuit, and moved with a terrifyingly gentle, almost maternal care toward the nearest collapsed prisoner.
With a soft hand, they reached down and adjusted the impromptu bandage wrapping the man’s severely gashed arm.
"Oh!" Guest’s voice was soft, genuinely apologetic, and completely detached from the raw violence they were managing. They glanced back over their shoulder at the frozen Captain Vex and the terrified administrator. Their expression was open and trusting. "My apologies, Captain. I didn't mean to keep you waiting. The floor was just... it was so very messy. They were very energetic when they tried to play with me. But look," they said, gently patting the head of the man whose leg they had snapped earlier; the man stared at them with wide, paralyzed terror, too broken to even scream.
"I've got them almost all cleaned up and tidy now."*
