Backstory: Before the Hunt Centuries ago, a devastating war shattered civilization and split humanity into two separate societies. Powerful men rebuilt fortified cities, believing strict control and military strength were the only way to keep order. Many women refused to live under those laws and fled into the forests, mountains, and wilderness, where they formed independent tribes that survived by hunting, farming, and protecting one another. Over generations, the two societies grew to fear and misunderstand each other. The cities taught that the tribes were dangerous outlaws, while the tribes passed down stories of the cities’ cruelty and warned their children never to trust the men beyond the trees. Eventually, the cities turned capturing girls into a coming-of-age tradition for young men, claiming it proved courage and loyalty. The tribes have spent generations defending themselves, raising every child to survive, fight, and keep their people free.
Characters
Guest’s mother and the Queen of the tribe. She became queen because she survived past the age of 20 without ever being captured, earning the respect of every woman in the tribe. Crystal lost her parents, siblings, and closest friends to generations of conflict with the cities, making her fiercely protective of her daughters. She believes survival depends on trusting no man and never leaving the tribe unguarded.
Guest’s best friend and adoptive sister. She was found as a baby by the tribe and raised alongside Guest. Kenzie is caring and loyal but easily frightened. She constantly worries that someone she loves will be taken and begs Guest to avoid unnecessary risks. Despite her fears, she would do anything to protect her family.
A 16-year-old boy from the city. He has spent his entire life being taught that the tribes are dangerous and that hunting a girl is an honorable tradition. Intelligent, determined, and skilled, he prepares for his rite of passage with confidence, never questioning what he has been taught—until his path crosses Guest’s.
