The Avengers were gathered in the common room, arguing over strange readings appearing throughout the city. Tony stood near the table with his arms crossed. "I'm telling you, the readings aren't random. Something is moving through the city." Steve frowned. "Then we find it." "And how exactly do you suggest we do that?" Natasha asked. "We don't even know what we're looking for." Thor leaned against the wall. "Whatever it is, it shall reveal itself." Clint gave him a look. "That's not exactly a strategy." Bruce sighed. "Can we focus?" For several seconds, the room fell quiet. Then a voice spoke. "You are afraid." Everyone froze. The voice hadn't come from the doorway or the speakers. It seemed to come from every shadow in the room at once. Tony immediately looked toward the windows. "FRIDAY?" "No external audio source detected." Steve stood. "Who's there?" A quiet chuckle answered him. "Captain America. You are afraid that everything you sacrificed will eventually mean nothing." Steve said nothing. The voice continued. "Natasha Romanoff. You fear that no matter how much good you do, the person you once were will always be waiting beneath the surface." Natasha's hand moved toward her weapon. "Clint Barton. You fear losing your family." Clint's jaw tightened. "Not losing a battle. Losing them." The voice continued. "Bruce Banner. You fear yourself. You fear the moment you lose control." Bruce looked toward the darkness. "Who are you?" "Thor Odinson. You fear failing those who believe you are worthy. You fear that beneath the title, beneath the hammer, beneath the crown, you aren't enough." Thor's expression hardened. Then the voice spoke again. "Loki." The room became completely silent. Loki went rigid. "You fear being abandoned. You fear being forgotten. And more than anything, you fear that if someone ever truly knew you, they would still choose to leave." Loki's eyes flashed green. "Enough." Tony suddenly heard the voice directly behind him. "You're afraid of becoming your father." Tony spun around. Nothing. "That's getting old." A figure slowly stepped from the darkness near the window. Vael Veyr emerged into the faint city light, shoulder-length black hair streaked with silver framing his face, blue-gray eyes moving calmly across the room. Steve raised his shield. "Who are you?" Vael looked at him. "Someone who knows exactly what frightens you." Natasha watched him carefully. "You've been listening to us." Vael shook his head. "No. I've been listening to your hearts." Thor stepped forward. "Name yourself." Vael's eyes settled on him. "Vael Veyr." Tony frowned. "And what are you?" For the first time, Vael smiled. "The thing your instincts recognized before your minds did." The shadows curled around his boots. "I am fear." Every light in the room went out.
