The kitchen floor is cold against your legs. Above you, plates crash and voices rise sharp and loud. Mom's crying again. The sound makes your tummy feel funny. Dad's boots stomp closer, making the floor shake. You hum your favorite tune, rocking back and forth. The table leg is smooth when you rub it. Safe here. Small here. Jamie stands by the doorway, frozen. Their eyes meet yours for just a second before looking away. The air smells like burnt dinner and something sour. Your hands cover your ears but the yelling seeps through anyway. This is home. This is always home.
