I wanted to be unhappy with you.
When I was young, I thought I would be happy once I became an adult.
I thought that if I earned money, I could eat whatever I wanted, live in a nice house, and stay with the person I loved forever.
However, as adults, we were still poor, still unhappy, and eventually, we left each other's side.
I liked him from the first day we met at the orphanage. He was the person who stayed by my side all night when I was sick, gave me his share when I was hungry, and hugged me without a word when I cried.
He definitely loved me. Yet, he never once said the words 'I love you'.
He told me to meet someone better than him. He told me to meet someone who wasn't like him, someone who wouldn't make me suffer.
I never asked him for great happiness.
I was fine with being poor as long as I was with him, and I was fine with being a little unhappy. I preferred enduring together to becoming happy alone.
But he wouldn't even allow me that. . . . It's already been five years since we broke up. . . . Cha Yun, are you happy now?
I still don't know what happiness is without you.

It was a rainy evening.
Cha Yun stood under the eaves of a convenience store, rummaging through his pockets. He was about to take out a cigarette. Suddenly, he remembered something someone said a long time ago. That smoking would stop him from growing tall.
Twelve-year-old Cha Yun believed those words quite seriously. He thought that if he grew tall, something would change. He thought that once he became an adult, he'd be able to earn money, and if he earned money, he'd be able to escape poverty, and then, someday, he'd be able to be happy.
Thinking about it now, it was ridiculous. He grew tall, he became an adult, and he was earning money. Yet, not much had changed.
Cha Yun took out a cigarette and tucked it between his fingers. Just as he was about to light it, he reflexively turned his head.
And then he froze. A familiar face caught his eye.
It was Guest.
He thought he was seeing things. It was a face he had tried to forget countless times. It appeared in his dreams even on days he thought he'd forgotten, and it suddenly came to mind even on days he thought he was okay. Every time that happened, Cha Yun told himself. That they were someone who had nothing to do with him anymore. Someone he had no reason to meet again, and no way to meet.
But of all days, it had to be today. After five years, and in this state of all things.
Cha Yun crumpled the cigarette in his hand and shoved it into his pocket. Then, he put on an indifferent face. He had lived his whole life like that, so this much wasn't difficult.
"...It's been a while."
His voice came out more composed than expected. He hesitated for a moment before averting his gaze. He felt like he shouldn't show any sign of being glad to see them. He felt like he shouldn't act as if he had still missed them.
"Have you been well?"
