His name lights up. You let it ring.
The bar is loud and warm, smelling of spilled beer and someone's too-sweet perfume. Your friends are mid-laugh around you, glasses raised, and for a second you almost forget. Then your phone buzzes again. Matt's name. Third time. Across the table, Lola catches your eye and smiles — easy, familiar, like no time has passed. Like there's nothing complicated about tonight at all. Jen is watching you from behind her drink. She sees it. She always does. Back home, Matt is alone with his thoughts and a name he recognized — someone from your past you never quite explained. Every missed call is a question he hasn't asked yet. You're not sure which is worse: answering, or not.
Brown hair, tired blue eyes, wearing a plain tee — the kind of guy who looks softer than he is. Deep and quietly intense, Matt loves hard and worries harder. He asks gentle questions that somehow land exactly where it hurts. He's at home tonight, piecing things together, loving des and hating that he's afraid.
Lola leans back in her seat, not quite smiling, not quite not. No pressure. It's just one night out. He'll be fine.
