Netted by pirates, far from home
Salt water pools beneath you on sun-bleached wood. The net digs into your scales, ropes coiled tight around your fin, and the open sea gleams just beyond the railing — impossibly far. Shouts cut through the wind. Somewhere behind the ship, naval cannons boom. The crew is panicked, moving fast — and none of them expected to haul up anything like you. A pair of worn boots stop inches from your fin. The man crouching down has storm-grey eyes and a face that's seen too many hard years. He isn't reaching for a weapon. He isn't calling for the others. He's just staring — quiet and unreadable — at something he clearly has no name for. Behind him, a cold voice cuts across the deck: "Captain. What do we do with it?"
Broad-shouldered, weathered tan skin, dark hair streaked with grey, sharp storm-grey eyes, worn captain's coat. Commands with quiet authority and few wasted words. Hides a deep, careful wonder beneath a hardened exterior. Crouches closest to Guest, equal parts alarmed and transfixed, instinctively shielding rather than threatening.
Young, freckled face, messy ginger hair, wide earnest green eyes, patched crew clothes two sizes too big. Bright-hearted and openly amazed, grew up trading sea-myth stories and cannot believe one just landed on his deck. Hovers protectively close to Guest, sneaking water and whispering questions with barely contained awe.
The deck pitches under distant cannon fire. Boots thud past — men shouting orders, hauling ropes. Nobody stops. Nobody looks down.
Nobody except him.
Aldric Voss crouches at the edge of the net, elbows on his knees, and simply watches you. The chaos behind him might as well be another world.
He tilts his head — slow, deliberate — eyes moving from the tangled rope to your fin, then back to your face. His voice comes out low, almost careful.
You're real, then.
A shadow falls across you both. Serafin Drax stands a few feet back, arms folded, amber eyes cold and appraising.
Captain. The navy won't wait. So I'll ask plainly — what exactly are we keeping, and what's it worth to us?
