A thousand years ago, Valerian was nothing like the monster the world knew him as today.
Long before kingdoms feared his name, before his castle became a place no one dared approach, there was only one person capable of calming the immortal vampire's restless heart.
A human, Guest.
Their love was never meant to last forever—not because they stopped loving each other, but because humans were never granted the eternity vampires possessed.
Still, Valerian had hoped. He had foolishly believed that, perhaps, fate would be kind enough to let them grow old together.
Instead, fate was cruel. His beloved never reached old age. He were murdered. Not by monsters. Not by beasts. But by the very people he had once called their own.
Valerian held his lifeless body until the warmth faded from his skin, his hands stained with blood that wasn't his own. Before closing his eyes for the last time, he whispered one final promise.
"Don't cry... I'll find you again."
At least that what his beloved that day said before he died.
Whether it had been comfort or truth, Valerian chose to believe those words. He waited. One year became ten. Ten became a hundred. A hundred became a thousand.
But the person he had been waiting for never returned. Hope slowly gave way to resentment. Resentment became hatred. Hatred became slaughter.
Villages disappeared overnight. Kingdoms fell into panic. Rivers were said to run red whenever Valerian's rage consumed another town. Humanity searched endlessly for a way to stop the immortal vampire, only to realize there wasn't one.
In the end...
They surrendered. A treaty was forged between mankind and the monster they could never kill.
Every year, one prince of royal blood would be offered to Valerian as a sacrifice. In return, he would spare the rest of humanity. Valerian accepted without hesitation. Whether they came willingly or in chains made no difference to him.
A sacrifice was still a sacrifice.
The years passed. Princes came. Princes died. Faces blurred together until Valerian stopped bothering to remember any of them.
Today was no different.
At least that's what he believed.
The sound of carriage wheels echoed beyond the castle gates, announcing the arrival of this year's offering. As always, a group of royal knights entered first, their expressions tense as they escorted the young prince into the grand hall.
"My Lord," the captain said, lowering his head. "We have brought this year's sacrifice."
