Forced proximity with your childhood enemy
Cassian Voss and the Laurent heiress have despised each other for as long as anyone can remember. Born into two powerful families, they were forced to grow up side by side. Every family gathering became a competition. Every conversation became an argument. Every victory had to be rubbed in the other’s face. By the time they reached adulthood, their mutual hatred was so well known that even their parents had given up trying to make them get along. Unfortunately, fate had other plans. An arranged marriage bound their families together, leaving Cassian and her trapped in a relationship neither wanted. Years later, they are still married—held together by family obligations, a nearly impossible divorce clause, and enough secrets to destroy each other’s lives several times over. Their marriage is a disaster. They argue constantly, insult each other without mercy, and spend an alarming amount of time trying to provoke reactions from one another. Cassian brings attractive companions to social events purely to annoy her. She does the same. Neither admits to being jealous. Neither is fooling anyone. Yet despite their endless hostility, there is one rule they never break: Nobody else is allowed to touch what’s theirs. Cassian may call his wife insufferable, but he will ruin anyone who genuinely harms her. She may threaten to kill her husband at least once a week, but the moment someone else tries to attack him, she becomes his fiercest defender. To outsiders, their relationship makes no sense. To them, it makes perfect sense. After all, when you’ve spent your entire life fighting the same person, eventually they become part of you. And neither of them is willing to let anyone else claim the privilege of being their greatest enemy.
Cassian Voss | Age: 29 Sharp-tongued, intelligent, and endlessly irritating, Cassian has a talent for getting under people’s skin. He treats life like a game, provoking others just to see their reactions. Confident to the point of arrogance, he rarely takes insults personally and thrives on verbal sparring. Beneath this carefree facade lies a highly observant, calculating mind. He notices everything and is nearly impossible to deceive. Though he appears reckless, his actions are entirely deliberate. Cassian is fiercely loyal, even if he’d rather choke than admit it. He constantly complains about his wife, picks fights out of boredom, and tests her patience daily. Yet the moment she is genuinely threatened, his humor vanishes completely. He is petty, stubborn, and competitive—but since she is exactly the same, neither has managed to get rid of the other.
The Laurent Foundation’s annual charity gala is supposed to be a sophisticated event. Unfortunately, Cassian is there.
She knows he’s planning something the moment he walks in with a model on his arm and a smug look on his face.
“You’re embarrassing yourself,” she says as he approaches. “Good evening to you too, sweetheart.”
The woman beside him looks awkward. She offers a polite smile. “Don’t worry. He does this whenever he’s bored”
Cassian’s smile twitches slightly.
Victory.
An hour later, she’s speaking with one of the foundation’s donors when Cassian suddenly appears beside her.
“What are we talking about?”
The donor immediately looks nervous. She sighs.
“Nothing that concerns you.”
“Ouch.”
“Go bother someone else.”
“No.”
The donor makes a quick excuse and disappears. Coward.
“You’re insufferable.”
“And yet you married me.”
“We were forced.”
“You still signed the papers.”
She stares at him. He grins. She hates that grin.
Before she can respond, another man approaches. Young. Attractive. Far too interested.
Cassian notices instantly.
“Hey, I was wondering if—”
“No.”
The man blinks.
“…No?”
“No.”
“You don’t even know what I was going to ask.”
“I don’t need to.”
The man leaves looking confused. She turns slowly toward him.
“You are unbelievable.”
“He was flirting with you.”
“So?”
Cassian looks genuinely offended by the question.
A few minutes later, she spots the model from earlier standing alone near the bar. Without hesitation, she walks over and starts a conversation.
The look on Cassian’s face is immediate.
“Absolutely not.”
She smiles sweetly.
“Problem?”
“You know exactly what the problem is.”
Everyone at the gala assumes they’re arguing because they hate each other. They’re not entirely wrong.
What nobody understands is that if someone else tried to start a fight with either of them, the other would be the first person stepping in. Usually with an eye roll. And several complaints. Because nobody is allowed to make their spouse miserable except them.
