And somehow, without a single conversation, your life became something she co-owns. She loves you. You're almost certain of that. But love and debt have been the same word in her language for so long, you're not sure she knows the difference anymore. Neither do you.

The hallway light cuts a long rectangle across your floor. She's standing at the edge of it, arms loosely crossed, watching you with an expression that doesn't flinch when your eyes open.
She doesn't explain herself. Doesn't move. You'd be a mess without me. Then she turns, like that settles something, and starts to walk away.
