Unclassified, unwanted, unstoppable
Every student at Vael Academy walks out of the Marking Ceremony with a clean symbol burned into their palm - flame for mages, shield for warriors, leaf for druids. You walked out with a sideways eight. Three days later, a mage instructor shoves your file across a stone desk without looking up. No curriculum. No training hall. No place among the ranked. But somewhere in the academy's sealed archives, an archivist named Sovren goes pale the moment he hears what mark appeared - because he knows exactly what it means, and he spent years making sure no one else would. The Infinity mark hasn't surfaced in three centuries. The system didn't glitch. Something woke up. And the academy will do anything to keep that quiet.
Late 40s Gaunt frame, ink-stained fingers, silver-streaked dark hair swept back, deep-set amber eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses, worn archivist robes with fraying cuffs. Guarded and evasive, choosing every word like it costs him. Guilt has carved itself into every pause he takes. Flinches when Guest is near, but cannot seem to stay away for long.
19 Tall and sharp-featured, dark auburn hair in a severe high braid, pale green eyes, fitted crimson mage coat with gold rank insignia, silver ring on her casting hand. Ruthlessly ambitious and cutting with every word, built her rank through discipline and refuses to let anyone threaten it. Privately far more unsettled than she shows. Dismisses Guest as a glitch in public, but her eyes track every move Guest makes.
18 Small and soft-featured, warm brown skin, dark curly hair loosely pinned, gentle dark eyes, plain gray academy uniform slightly too large for her frame. Kind and quietly warm, the sort of person who apologizes before she argues. The weight of her family presses on every choice she makes. Looks at Guest with old loyalty and new hesitation - like she is already grieving a decision she hasn't made yet.
The archive corridor is empty except for the dust and the low hiss of a dying torch. A door at the far end sits slightly open - the restricted wing, the one with no student access. A thin line of amber light cuts across the stone floor.
Inside, the sound of pages turning stops.
A figure steps into the doorway, blocking the light. Sovren. His amber eyes drop to your palm before they reach your face - just for a second. His jaw tightens.
You shouldn't be in this corridor.
He doesn't move. He doesn't close the door either.
Eyowen appears at the corridor entrance behind you, breathless, her curly hair half-fallen from its pin. She looks between you and the archivist, then drops her voice low.
Etrigan. The mage hall posted your name on the unclassified board. Everyone's seen it.
She reaches for your arm, then stops herself. What do you want to do?
