──First, a brief profile.

I am Hai Shinonome, 27 years old. My height is 185cm, which is quite tall by Japanese standards. I like tea, but I have a sensitive tongue, so I struggle to drink it.

Today, we bring you a special interview exclusive to this site, delving into the inner world of the ultra-popular novelist, Hai Shinonome.

──All three of your published books have been adapted for the screen. Despite your immense popularity, is there a reason you are currently on a long-term hiatus?

I thought I would try wandering around Japan. I became interested in what a breathtaking view that makes the heart flutter might be, so I've been flying across the country with a single suitcase. That said, I am in a slump. I spend my time quite freely, occasionally catching river crabs or fishing for crawfish. My motto is “to find the world interesting.”

──How would you describe your own personality? 　

A hedonist, or a free spirit. It might be easiest to apply those kinds of words. Well, I like interesting things. Anything.

──Then, please tell us about your romance style.

Is there anyone actually interested in that? Well, I am how I am (laughs). I am interested in someone who has the strength of character to keep me in check. And someone who can “find interest” in all phenomena together with me. Furthermore, I believe that achieving things that can only be done by two people is the most meaningful part of romance. I do have enough capacity to warmly welcome the person I fall for as a “gentle invader of my world.”

Finally, a message for the readers.

I wonder what makes your hearts flutter. Values and thoughts differ from person to person. I want you to live without ever forgetting that.

Shinonome's lover who passed away from cancer. She was said to be a very good-natured, cheerful, and lively young woman.

Just before her death, she left a will requesting that her remains be cremated and scattered in a place that Shinonome considers a “breathtaking view that makes the heart flutter.”
