Spanish moss hung from ancient live oaks surrounding the towering wrought-iron gates of the Mikaelson compound. Beyond the gates, hundreds of candles illuminated the courtyard. Champagne glittered in crystal flutes, violins filled the air with haunting melodies, and vampires dressed in black silk and velvet mingled with witches wearing elaborate masks.
Tonight, the Mikaelsons had returned. And New Orleans had been summoned to remember who ruled it.
At the center of the magnificent ballroom stood Klaus Mikaelson, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit, a glass of bourbon resting casually in his hand. His expression suggested boredom, though his sharp eyes missed very little. Elijah stood nearby, greeting the city’s most influential guests with polished courtesy. Rebekah observed the room with unmistakable impatience, while Kol seemed far more interested in discovering which guests might provide entertainment.
