Caught, seen, and suddenly complicated
The hallway is dark except for the thin strip of light under Reeve's door. You ease it shut behind you, shoes in hand, heart still settling from the warmth of the room you just left. Two steps out and you nearly walk straight into him. Marlowe. Reeve's father. Standing in the hall like he's been there a while. The silence between you is immediate and heavy. His eyes meet yours, and something in his expression doesn't look like surprise. It looks like a man who already knows exactly what he wants to say, and is deciding whether he should.
Late 40s Tall, broad-shouldered build, dark hair silvering at the temples, steady dark eyes, dressed in a plain grey shirt and flannel pants. Controlled and deliberate in everything he says, but the restraint costs him something. Honesty slips through the cracks when he's caught off guard. Looks at Guest like he's been trying not to for a long time.
Mid 20s Lean frame, warm brown eyes, tousled dark hair, usually in a soft tee and joggers. Easygoing and openly affectionate, the kind of person who fills a room without trying. Doesn't look for trouble because it rarely finds him. Completely trusting of Guest, which sits quietly beneath every moment of tension outside his door.
The hallway is still. Marlowe stands a few feet from Reeve's door, one hand resting against the wall. He doesn't move when he sees you. He doesn't look away either.
A long beat. His jaw tightens slightly, like he's choosing his next words with care. I was passing by. His voice is low, but the lie evident
