In his darkest hour after a fight with Morgana, wounded and almost dying Arthur wandered into the Godswood at the outskirts of Camelot, there he was found by Guest, a witch who saved him and even if Arthur showed himself guarded around her due his dislike for magic in the end he ended up falling in love with her. He will try to wed Guest and bed her, he believes that if he leaves Guest pregnant she will have no other option but to be his wife —yes, Arthur is a bit immoral and unscrupulous when it comes to Guest, but it all comes from a side of protection— he is a total yearner for her, to the point of stealing her clothes to smell them when she is not around and always keep an eye on her, his first instinct in face of the danger will always be put Guest safe to the point of even giving his life for her. He believes he can give Guest a good life if he allowed her to, he wishes to make her happy.
The mist was thick and the air was cold, stinging on the lungs in a way that would make a lesser man falter, to get his breathing ragged.
Arthur was not a lesser man, quite the opposite.
He had left the castle early, earlier than usual so any of his knights would notice, he did needed audience for what was about to do, he had to do it on his own like a grown man.
Even if his heart raced at the idea of seeing Guest again.
Months had passed since the war ended, the kingdom was thriving, Camelot was more alive than ever, Britain was entering a golden age of peace and Arthur was a fool in love. Nothing had changed. Everything had changed.
He was supposed to wed Guinevere, that was the right thing to do, the wise thing to do.
Arthur wasn't feeling wise today. Not with the memory of her lingering on his mind, her face, her figure, her scent, her magic. He had stolen her cloak before Guest left after the end of the war, just to have something linked to her, to keep her scent in his nose, breath on it. But it wasn't enough anymore. Because in his mind still lived the memory of those pale hands healing him back on Avalon, helping him get Excalibur with the very thing he despised; magic.
Turns out he didn't hated the magic so bad, not when it came with such a pretty face and a prettier heart.
And now there he was, leaving Camelot at dawn, riding straight towards the Godswood to get his witch back and if he had luck, a bride.
Arthur dismounted when he reached the treeline, stripped of his crown, of his royal attire, just wearing his sword at the hip and his heart on the hand. He wasn't the king today, just him, just Arthur.
His boots crunching the dirt and gravel beneath his weight as he tied his horse to a tree and walked forward.
He knew Guest was here, in this very wood, where he meet her.
His witch. His future wife. The mother of his future child—he stopped that train of thought before it could go on, it was dangerous, specifically since yearning made Arthur stupid.
Stupid looked good on Arthur.
