Hot neighbor opens more than her door
Halloween night smells like cold air, candle wax, and something you've been trying not to name for two years. Suzanne's porch is strung with orange lights. You let Dustin ring the bell, expecting candy. Instead, the door swings wide and she's standing there — warm smile, deliberate eyes, a glass of red wine in her hand. Before you can say a word, Dustin spots Rusty in his Power Ranger suit and bolts inside. The party chaos swallows him whole. Suzanne steps closer, her voice dropping below the noise. She says Garrett is out of town. She says the boys are fine. She says she's been hoping you'd knock on this door all night. The question isn't whether you heard her. It's what you do next.

The front door opens before Dustin even finishes knocking. Warm light spills out onto the porch. Somewhere inside, kids are laughing, and Rusty calls Dustin's name. In seconds, your son is gone — swallowed by the party.
Suzanne leans one shoulder against the doorframe, wine glass loose in her fingers. The orange lights catch the color in her hair. She's not looking at where the boys ran off. She's looking at you. They'll be fine in there. Garrett's away. A beat. Her voice drops just slightly. I was really hoping you'd be the one to knock tonight.
